Tricks of the trade?

I'm Stephanie and I am an aspiring author. I write all the time and I absolutely love writing and reading. Throughout my journey, I figured it'd be cool to journal it and let you guys experience it as well. =]

For starters, life is treating me fairly decent. I can't really complain about much; except that I have fallen behind on some of my writings. I'm going to attempt to write a bit tonight. Maybe do some editing or maybe actually write something. I have about 20 unfinished stories that I need to put on my "finished" pile. It's just so difficult because my head is so unorganized. I have so many ideas crawling through my brain that I just want to use all of them! It's crazy!! I also haven't written a poem since I took my poetry class back in Spring of 2010. That may not seem like a long time, but it is when you're a writer. I found some of my writing books, though. Maybe they will have some exercises or something to help me get back in the swing of things.

If you guys have any tips or tricks of the trade, don't hesitate to let me in on them. I could use all the help I can get.

Well, I'm going to go to work and maybe write some.

xoxo
Stephanie

  1. I also have a very unorganized brain. I wish I could sort ideas into files in my head so I could just focus on one at a time...but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. ;)
I read a post last night that had an idea I think will help me and maybe it can help you as well. Part of my problem is I've restricted to writing in a classic start from the beginning and move forward to the end. I'm a pantser but I have a pretty good idea how the whole story will unfold. But currently one of my characters who doesn't get introduced until later in the story is driving me crazy! He won't get out of my head so I can write the chapters before he comes into the picture. I can't focus. Too many ideas for him are flying at me. So if your muse is hounding you, write for him/her. Why do I have to start at the beginning? If a scene keeps popping into your head then write it out and stick it on a rough outline or story board where you think it will end up in your novel or story. Doesn't have to be perfect, that's what editing is for. Get it out of your head and onto paper. Sometimes an idea or character just isn't going to be satisfied being jotted down in a notebook to be referenced later, it wants out now. ;)
Also, reading is always a good tool for a writer. Sometimes reading another author's writing style, be it an awesome voice, beautiful prose, ingenious plot twists, etc. is all the motivation and head clearing you need. ☺
    Best of luck!

  2. I've been having some trouble getting started lately. So I might actually try this and write the end of this chapter before I write up to it!
